Hyderabad witnessed a groundbreaking event as Serving through Sports Foundation, in collaboration with American Corner and various multinational companies, organized the first-ever Disabled Men’s Wheelchair Basketball tournament. The event took place at St. Francis College for Women in Begumpet, marking a significant milestone in promoting inclusivity and empowerment through sports.
The tournament aimed to inspire individuals with disabilities across India to participate in sports and experience the numerous benefits it offers. By raising awareness about the opportunities available in wheelchair basketball, the organizers hoped to engage more people and encourage their active involvement in sports.
Vijay Bhaskar, a prominent figure associated with Serving through Sports Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the tournament, stating, “This tournament has ignited a sense of hope among individuals with disabilities in India, inspiring them to embrace sports. The more people learn about the possibilities and advantages of playing sports, the more they become motivated to participate.”
Wheelchair basketball has a promising future in India, evident from its growth from a mere handful of players to the establishment of competitive teams. However, one of the significant challenges is the lack of awareness about this sport and the opportunities it presents for individuals with disabilities. Vijay emphasized the importance of creating awareness and ensuring that all eligible persons with disabilities have the opportunity to participate in wheelchair basketball.
During the event, Sri Kiran from Sarojini Fitness and Cricket, along with Sri Veleti Srikanth from Serving through Sports, provided detailed insights into the participating basketball teams. Eight teams competed in a series of fifteen matches, spanning across two days. The tournament showcased the exceptional skills and determination of the players, as they demonstrated their passion for the sport and their ability to overcome challenges.
The initiative received significant media attention, shedding light on the achievements and potential of athletes with disabilities. Through such events, the organizers aimed to break down barriers and create a more inclusive society where individuals with disabilities are recognized for their talents and contributions.
The success of the Disabled Men’s Wheelchair Basketball tournament not only showcased the sporting abilities of participants but also inspired a broader conversation about the importance of accessibility and equal opportunities in the realm of sports. The event served as a platform to promote understanding, respect, and admiration for persons with disabilities, fostering a more inclusive and supportive community.
As Serving through Sports Foundation continues its efforts to empower individuals with disabilities through sports, the impact of initiatives like the Wheelchair Basketball tournament will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy. By providing platforms for participation and highlighting the capabilities of athletes with disabilities, the foundation is driving positive change and creating a more inclusive society for all.
