Chief Minister Announces Honorarium with Benefits Starting July 2023

In a significant development, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, has made a noteworthy announcement regarding the honorarium for government officials. This announcement brings good news as an amount of up to Rs 30,000 will be credited to their accounts, marking an increase in the monthly honorarium.

The state government has responded to long-standing demands by increasing the monthly honorarium for government servants. Following the Chief Minister’s announcement, eligible individuals will observe an amount of up to Rs 30,000 in their accounts, providing them with financial benefits.

Details of the Honorarium Announcement

Chief Minister MK Stalin has specifically declared the honorarium for mayors of the 21 corporations in Tamil Nadu. The honorarium for mayors has been set at Rs 30,000 per month, while deputy mayors will receive Rs 15,000, and councilors will be granted Rs 10,000. Additionally, municipal chairpersons will receive Rs 15,000 per month, while vice-chairpersons and councilors will be awarded Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively. Furthermore, Nagar Panchayat presidents will receive Rs 10,000, vice-presidents will be granted Rs 5,000, and ward members will receive Rs 2,500.

Significance of the Honorarium Announcement

In addition to the honorarium, the government has expressed that this initiative will contribute to strengthening the administrative capabilities of urban municipal bodies and serve as a significant milestone. It is important to note that the demand for a monthly honorarium for mayors, deputy mayors, and municipal and city panchayat representatives was raised on April 13, 2022. Upon examining these demands, the Chief Minister has ordered the disbursement of the honorarium. An official statement confirms that this honorarium serves as recognition for their services and will be effective starting from July. Councilors and officials have expressed their satisfaction with this decision, expressing hope for further progress in the future.

Comparison with Other States

Tamil Nadu has taken the lead in providing an honorarium to mayors. In Karnataka, councilors receive Rs 15,000 as an honorarium, while in Maharashtra, councilors benefit from Rs 25,000. Similarly, in Goa, councilors are granted Rs 10,800. In terms of mayors’ honorarium in other states, Maharashtra pays Rs 25,000, Kerala provides Rs 16,800, and Rajasthan offers Rs 20,000. Tamil Nadu’s decision to increase the honorarium for government officials showcases the government’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding their valuable services.
